Bolu is one of the favorite cities of nature lovers in the Western Black Sea region. Bolu has always been a center of attraction with its forests, lakes and snow tourism. The Phrygians ruled the region in 1200 BC and the Persians in 600 BC. Alexander the Great defeated the Persians in 336 BC and took over Bolu like many other places in Anatolia. After the death of Alexander the Great, the Kingdom of Bithynia was established in Bolu. After 1071, it came under the sovereignty of the Turks.
